Flagler County: A Case for suspension abolition

A feature story I wrote for the Summer 2016 of Teaching Tolerance magazine on Flagler County Public Schools and how they are working towards a new discipline model discipline advocates call "suspension abolition." The story details FCPS journey from zero-tolerance discipline to suspension abolition.

Don't forget about black girls

The 2016 The Condition of Education report showed Black women rank as one of the most educated groups in the United States. In this blog post for Teaching Tolerance, I urge people not to forget about the plight of Black girls in the K-12 public school system where they rank as the fastest growing group in the juvenile justice system.

After the flag comes down

Following the Charleston 9 murders, there was increased momentum to take down Confederate flags, but our work to denounce systemic racism cannot stop at symbolic markers.

Urban Agriculture as Activism: A Guide for Community Organizers is a guide that details how community residents can turn urban agriculture spaces into hubs for community organizing. Using the Dreaming Out Loud Garden and Dix Street Garden in Washington, D.C. as case studies, the guide explains how food sovereignty principles are tools for community empowerment.
